In the early Victorian era, women wore corsets, balloonish sleeves and crinolines. For men, it was stove-pipe pants and cravats -- broad and often frilly neckties. The clean-shaven look of the Regency was out. Mustaches, mutton-chop sideburns, Piccadilly Weepers, full beards and Van Dykes like that worn by Napoleon III were the order of the day.
In West Michigan, Victorian architecture is a prevalent and a visual reminder of the years between the 1830s and the 1870s -- and of the cultural, political, and industrial influences which produced these charming structures. The region is also filled with many Victorian communities .
